How to know it's the spring
Pull the emergency release and try to lift the door by hand. A door with a sound spring lifts easily and stays put wherever you leave it — that's the counterbalance doing its job.
A door with a broken spring is 80 to 150 kilos of dead weight. If you can barely move it, or it slams down when released, stop and leave it closed.
Torsion and extension
Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door and are the modern standard. Extension springs run along the tracks either side and are found on older installations.
Torsion generally lasts longer and fails more predictably. Extension springs are the ones that need a safety cable through the centre — if yours doesn't have one, ask about it, because a snapped extension spring without a containment cable becomes a projectile.
Why this one job isn't DIY
A torsion spring holds enormous stored energy whether the door is up or down, and releasing it without proper winding bars can cause a serious hand injury.
The part itself is cheap. You're paying for the technique, for the correct rating being matched to the door's actual weight, and for the tension being set properly — a spring wound wrong fails again within months.
Cycles, not years
Springs are rated in cycles: torsion springs give a minimum of about 10,000 to 15,000 (Wikipedia, 'Garage door', read 14 October 2026). At 10,000, a household door doing four cycles a day reaches that in around seven years; a busy one gets there in four.
Which is why 'how old is it' is the wrong question and 'how often does it run' is the right one. A door on a holiday let with frequent changeovers can age faster than the calendar suggests.
