The two-minute check

Battery first — a fading battery loses range before it loses function, so a remote that only works from three metres is usually just flat.

Then the wall button. If the wall button works and the remote doesn't, the opener is fine and you have a remote problem. If neither works, the remote is a red herring.

Coding a replacement

Most openers from the last twenty years pair a new handset via a learn button on the motor head. Older systems use DIP switches that have to be physically matched.

Universal remotes cover a lot of brands but not all, and a cheap one that half-works is worse than none. Check the opener brand and model before buying anything online.

If a remote was lost rather than broken

Treat it as a lost house key, particularly if the garage has internal access. Clear all stored codes on the opener and re-pair only the handsets you still hold.

That takes minutes and it invalidates the missing one. Worth doing even if you're fairly sure it's under a car seat.

Access on holiday properties

Noosa, Coolum and Mooloolaba carry a lot of short-stay letting, and handsets handed to guests have a way of not coming back.

A keypad avoids the problem entirely. Newer openers with app control also let you check remotely whether the door was left open after a changeover — genuinely useful on a property you don't live at.
