What a panel swap can and can't fix

A sectional door is separate panels bolted together, so a damaged section can be replaced without touching the rest. That works when the profile is still manufactured and the damage is confined to one or two panels.\n\nIt does not work when the door has racked. An impact hard enough to dent a panel usually bends a hinge or track too, and swapping the panel alone leaves the door running crooked.

The fading problem, stated honestly

Queensland sun fades Colorbond, and it fades it fast. A new panel next to eight-year-old ones will not match, and no amount of careful colour selection changes that.\n\nOn a door facing the street it usually matters. On a rear or side garage it usually doesn't. Decide which yours is before you agree to anything, because it's the single most common source of disappointment in this job.

Corrosion is a different decision

Impact damage is localised. Corrosion isn't. If the bottom edge of one panel has rusted through, the panels either side have almost certainly started.\n\nOn a beachfront door at Coolum or Alexandra Headland, replacing one corroded panel buys a year. That's worth knowing before spending a third of a new door's price on it.

When it's genuinely worth it

A newish door, current profile, one panel damaged, everything else sound. That job is straightforward and clearly cheaper than replacement.\n\nOutside those conditions, get both numbers — panel repair and full replacement — and compare them properly. A technician who won't give you both is not helping you decide.
