A single-skin steel door facing west absorbs a large amount of afternoon sun and radiates it into the garage. In a subtropical summer that turns a garage into an oven, which matters if it's a workshop, a gym, or shares a wall with a bedroom.
It also cooks anything stored in there, and shortens the life of the opener's electronics.
An insulated door genuinely reduces radiant heat coming through the door itself. It measurably helps a converted or habitable garage.
It does not fix a hot garage whose heat comes through an uninsulated roof, which on plenty of houses is the larger source. Be sceptical of a quote that promises a cool garage from the door alone.
Insulated doors are substantially heavier. That means higher-rated springs, more load through cables, hinges and rollers, and an opener sized for the weight.
If you upgrade to an insulated door on existing hardware, the springs must be re-rated. Fitting a heavy door onto the old spring set is the most common thing done wrong in this trade, and it fails within months.
Best case is a west-facing garage that's used as a room. Marginal on a south-facing garage that only ever holds a car.
Up on the range at Maleny or Montville the argument shifts — the value there is less about heat and more about condensation, because an insulated skin is less prone to sweating in persistent damp.
