Read more →The Sunshine Coast isn't one environment. Within forty kilometres you go from beachfront salt to a humid coastal plain to a range that sits 400 metres up and gets a great deal more rain. Doors fail differently in each.
A door at Mooloolaba and a door at Maleny are in genuinely different environments. The beachfront gets salt. The coastal plain gets heat and humidity. The Blackall Range sits 400 metres up, is several degrees cooler and considerably wetter, and that persistent damp is hard on opener electronics in a way salt never is.
Noosa, Coolum, Peregian and Mooloolaba carry a lot of holiday lets and second homes. A door that isn't cycled for three months stiffens in its tracks, and the first cycle after a long gap is when things break — usually the opener straining against rollers that have gone tight rather than a part that has actually failed.
The Blackall Range forces summer storms up and over, and the coast below takes the runoff — driven rain, sudden pressure changes and the occasional hail cell. Power surges from those storms are a common cause of dead opener boards.
Most failures give some warning — a noise, a hesitation, a door sitting crooked in the opening. The ones that don't are cables and springs, and whether those go early depends on which of this region's three climates your door lives in.
Most repairs land between $150 and $600. A service call is usually $90 to $180 and normally comes off the repair. The part decides the number — the postcode mostly decides the travel.

A broken torsion spring, most of the time. If the door is very heavy to lift by hand, or you heard a bang from the garage recently, that's almost certainly it. The motor isn't broken — it just can't lift a door that has lost its counterbalance.
Strongly advised against. A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to lift a door weighing 80 to 150 kilos, and it holds it whether the door is up or down. Releasing it without proper winding bars is how people lose fingers. The part is cheap; the technique is what you're paying for.
Not for repairs. Repairs and servicing aren't classed as building work under the QBCC, so no licence is needed for springs, cables, motors, tracks or panels. Installation that cuts a new opening or alters the structure does need a licensed contractor.
Altitude and damp. Maleny, Montville and Mapleton sit around 400 to 500 metres, are noticeably cooler and get considerably more rain than the coast. That persistent moisture gets into opener housings and circuit boards. Down at Mooloolaba the same door fails from salt in the cables instead. Different cause, different part, different fix.
Often not. A door that hasn't been cycled for months stiffens up, and the opener strains against tight rollers and dry tracks. It reads like a motor problem and usually isn't. If a property sits empty, cycling the door occasionally does more good than anything else.
