Read the door before touching it

Look at where the gap is. Higher on the left than the right means the left cable has gone. Both sides even but the door jammed halfway usually means a roller has left the track at a join, or a track has been bent by an impact.

That two-second look tells a technician more over the phone than any description of the noise it made.

The one thing not to do

Do not run the opener again to 'see if it'll go back'. With one cable live and one gone, every cycle drags the door further out of square and starts bending the panels.

A cable job is $150 to $400. A cable job plus two bent panels is a new door. The difference is usually three or four hopeful presses of the remote.

Making it safe until someone arrives

Pull the emergency release so the opener isn't holding anything, then leave the door exactly where it is. Don't try to level it by hand.

If it's stuck open and the garage connects to the house, that's a security issue worth saying on the phone — it changes how quickly someone gets there.

Why coastal doors do this more

Cables corrode from the inside of the strand where you can't see it. A cable at Alexandra Headland or Golden Beach can look sound and still be at half strength.

It's the single best argument for having cables inspected at a service rather than waiting — it is the one failure that gives no warning at all.
